What is Spray Painting?

Spray painting is commonly known principally through our, hopefully rare, experiences in getting our damaged vehicles fixed. Even though spray painting is more than cars it is the application of a liquid coating through a gun that sprays the liquid on to the part being coated. Spray paint is very accessible but very difficult to undertake correctly and without runs.

Up to the 1970's Spray painting was the dominant form of coating. Even though it has been superseded by powder coating, Multicoat's spray painting business is steadily growing because demand is strong in specialised areas and the number of people who know how to paint is diminishing.

What is Paint made from?

There are four main components in any paint formula:

Powders: Pigments control the colour, the opacity of the paint and the gloss level.

Resin or Binder: The binder can be thought of as a glue which holds the pigments together and sticks them to the surface. Its other major function is to provide many of the physical film characteristics such as durability and flexibility.

Solvent or Carrier: The solvent or carrier in a paint serves to allow the resin and pigments to be applied to a surface. It evaporates after application and does not form part of the applied film.

Additives: There are many different additives used in the manufacture of paint in order to determine its final performance, characteristics. For example, Zinc Oxide is used to resist mildew, to provide UV protection, to inhibit tannin staining and to add strength to the final film.

How is Paint made?

Paint manufacture is a relatively simple batch process. The raw materials such as pigment, a pigment vehicle, binder, solvents and additives are mixed in quantities ranging from 1,000 litres to 20,000 litres.
