What is Powder Coating?

Powdercoating is like spray painting but a dry powder is sprayed onto the item to be coated. The item is then placed in an oven to heat the part, the powder heats up, melts and flows over the surface to look like paint and cures. Because of the equipment needed, powder coating is a factory-applied finish.

What is Powder made from?

Most powders in Australia are made from polyester or epoxy resins. ie: plastic.

How is Powder made?

The main components are resins (the basic ingredient), pigments (gives colour), curing agents (makes the powder harden) and additives (the secret ingredients). They are weighed and mixed together as a dust. This mixture is then heated and squeezed through an extruder (like a meat mincer) that melts and mixes the ingredients together. On cooling, the mix is crushed to make a dust of the required particle size. The dust is then boxed and shipped to the applicator.
