What are the Advantages and Limitations of Powder Coating?

We are regularly asked about the differences between powder coating and paint. Here is the summary:

Advantages of Powder over Paint

Limitations

Lower cost in comparison to paint. Restricted colour selection. Take what the market makes or wait weeks for made to order powders.
Tough finish. Only easily applied to metals. Powder coating for wood and plastics is very limited in Australia.
Fast Turn around. No need for drying time. Thick first coat. Recoating is possible but may lead to inferior appearance and very thick coat.
No solvent emissions. Great for green house problem. Limited choice of gloss level.
Contains few harmful chemicals. Limited choice of textures.
Easy to apply. Low skill involved. Low corrosion protection. This is a problem because most powder coaters in Australia do not have pre-treatment systems.
Low resistance to sunlight. Yellow, red and orange fade rapidly. Higher grades of powder are available but their use is limited to licensed applicators.
Corrosion resistance is largely a result of the pre-treatment used, which is often nothing at all.

In general, what is better, paint or powder? Cars are still painted …
